The Odyssey of a Black Woman Married to a White Man in Mauritania

Homelessness is a pain so deep that it cuts through your soul like machine cuts through glass, so smooth and so fast, leaving a gaping wound, blood and all parts of you scattered on the ground. I never wanted to go to Mauritania but my ex husband, an American convinced me to do so because anything that looked white was a target in Nigeria and a good catch for ransome. For most black criminals, all whites are rich so we decided to leave in a country that was affordable and he could study Arabic since we were both muslim converts but along the way, our fairy tale romance turned to tales of narrcissim, lies and the desire for my white ex to have a black wife who worshipped him like white was the color of God. I was tired of the abuse so divorce was a relief as long as I could get my deferred islamic dowry and buy a flight ticket back to Lagos; to the dreary home of my family but home no matter how tattered will always be home especially when it contained my nine year old son who was to jo...

Statement of Purpose (1)

Academic Background and Purpose Of Study

As a child, I grew up in an orphanage where I had the best childhood I could ever wish for. It was indeed home to me and I knew many other orphans and non-orphans who did not have the life I had at the orphanage. We had teachers and care givers who dedicated their lives and time to us and we weren't just their 'duty', we were loved. I was also opportuned to attend the most prestigious university in Nigeria, the University of Lagos where I received a degree in Business Administration.

When I came of age, I wanted to do more for humanity like the caregivers who worked at the orphanage I grew up in. So, I began to work as an uncertified social work volunteer, assisting in the support of widows, orphans and the elderly. I received awards and recognition for services I rendered but I wanted to do more. There was so much to do and volunteering couldn't help me achieve what I wanted to achieve for the less privileged families in my society. So I founded “The Baytus Salaam Foundation" after I got married.

Baytus Salaam Foundation is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) that supports finacially and with vocational trainings, widows, orphans and vulnerable senior citizens. We have organised several activities, events and seminars to improve the lives of our beneficiaries but I realized that in order to achieve most of the foundation's goals, I need to be equipped with the right skills. A degree in Social Work would give me the knowledge and expertise I need to achieve greater impact in the lives of the vulnerable people I work with everyday.

Why UK?

UK has an amazing track record when it comes to the number of great people that have emerged from its academic institutions. It has also developed and is still developing, a world-class educational system that meets international standard and recognition.

Another factor is the accommodating atmosphere in the UK where people with diverse cultural backgrounds, religion beliefs, and races co-exisit peacefully in communities. This atmosphere, is one where I can comfortably settle into while focusing on acquiring the knowledge I need to improve the lives of the vulnerable people I care for in Nigeria.

Why (insert the UK University name)?

During my research for the most suitable university for my master's degree, I stumbled on (insert the UK University name) and I was in awe of the recommendations it received.  I want to be where I would be exposed to a high standard learning experience coupled with up-to-date facilities and that is what (insert the UK University name) gives to its students.

Furthermore, my personal values matches with the core values of the University which has delivered consistently in terms of quality and purpose-driven education. As I am a firm believer of excellence and equity, I have decided that studying at (insert the UK University name) is the best thing for me. It would be an honour to be part of your university's history and I believe that at (insert the UK university name), I would indeed be prepared to become a more valuable member of my society upon my return to Nigeria.
