Mauritania Visas & Visa Renewals
Mauritania is a country located in West Africa with its capital in Nouakchott. It shares a border with Western Sahara in the north, Algeria in the northeast, Mali to the east and Senegal in the southwest.
The Mauritania society is a mixture of Arab-Berber, recently emancipated black Mauritanians and black immigrants from neighboring west African countries. Arabic is the official language, but Hasaniyah is widely spoken among the Arabs and the emancipated black Mauritanians. French on the other hand is widely used by the black African minorities that migrated from Senegal, Mali, Niger, due to the country’s colonial history under French rule. These minority tribes also speak Pulaar, Soninke, and Wolof.
In Mauritania, Islam is the dominant religion and it influences the country's political and societal structure with Sunni islam being the dominant islamic sect in the country.
Mauritania is largely underdeveloped with an economy that is heavily dependent on agriculture, mining (particularly iron ore, gold, and copper), and fishing. However, in recent times, there has been a surge in entrepreneurship in Mauritania with many Mauritanians establishing small to medium scale businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector. Although employment opportunities are low for both the locals and foreigners in the country, Mauritania has successfully positioned itself as a fertile ground for foreign investors who take advantage of the country's rapid shift from traditional lifestyle to a more modern way of life.
Why You Should Travel to Mauritania
Mauritania offers a unique experience for travelers who seek adventure that is not yet worn down by tourists. While Nouakchott, its capital, is a safe place to raise a family, Mauritania is also a country where you can expect to have a high return on investment if you invest in the right business. Aside from these, here are some tourist-friendly reasons why you should consider visiting Mauritania.
Mauritania is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Sahara desert. Visitors can explore:
● Historical Islamic libraries
● Nomadic lifestyles
● Fish markets
● Coastal scenery
● Bird parks
● Ancient trade routes and caravan towns
● Beautiful stone buildings with intricate geometric designs
● The iron ore train which is one of the longest and heaviest trains in the world, carrying iron ore across the desert.
● The rich saharan ecosystem consists of camels, fennec foxes, and desert reptiles.
● Desert oases and the unique flora and fauna that survive in these harsh environments.
● Warm and welcoming Mauritania people and their exotic traditional tea ceremonies.
Mauritania Visa Types & Renewals
Mauritania offers various types of visas depending on the purpose of your travel. Let's look at Mauritania visas and how to renew them.
Types of Visas & Visa Requirements
Mauritania offers visitors, tourist visa, business visa, work visa, transit visa and diplomatic/official visa. The required documents for visa applications may vary slightly depending on the type of visa you are applying for, but the general requirements include:
Passport: A valid passport with at least six months of validity from the date of entry.
Visa Application Form: Completed and signed form.
Passport-Sized Photos: Two recent photos.
Proof of Accommodation: Hotel bookings, a letter of invitation, or similar proof.
Flight Itinerary: A copy of your flight booking or e-ticket.
Proof of Sufficient Funds: Evidence that you can support yourself financially during your stay.
Visa Fee: Payment of the applicable visa fee (varies depending on the type of visa and duration of stay).
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate: Required for travelers coming from countries where yellow fever is prevalent.
Visa Application Process
In Person Visa Application: Most visas need to be applied for in person at a Mauritanian embassy or consulate. You will need to submit the required documents and pay the visa fee.
On-Arrival Visa: Mauritania no longer offer visa on arrival at certain points of entry (such as the Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport). Apply for visa online (ANRPTS website) before flying into the country. After filling out the application online, necessary information would be sent to you via email which you are to print out and show the immigration officers at the airport. Then you would be expected to pay $55/$60 for the visa and taken to a room for data capture.
Visa Fees: visa fees vary depending on the type of visa and the duration of stay. For instance, a single-entry visa for 30 days may cost between $55 - $60 and a multiple-entry visa or longer-term visa may have higher fees. These fees can be paid at the embassy or consulate, or upon arrival if applying for a visa on arrival.

Visa Processing Time
The processing time for visas can vary. For embassy applications, it may take from 5 to 15 business days, depending on the type of visa and nationality of the applicant. On-arrival visas are usually processed immediately at the airport in less than an hour.
Visa Renewal
If you need to extend your stay in Mauritania, you must apply for an extension at the Agence nationale (ANRPTS), Tevragh Zeina, Nouakchott.
Visa extensions are granted at the discretion of the authorities and typically require valid reasons such as study, work, business, or medical needs.
Travelling to Mauritania By Land
Traveling to Mauritania could be a bit risky and tedious because of the security issues at some of the land borders. Traveling via Western Sahara to Mauritania via land could be a death trap as areas of this route are laced with unexploded mines. Other countries that border Mauritania however are relatively safe for land travel. It's a good idea to check the latest news about the border situation in Mauritania before attempting to enter Mauritania through any of the countries that border it.
Border Crossings: Some travelers enter Mauritania by land from neighboring countries like Senegal, Mali, or Morocco. In these cases, visas are generally required beforehand or obtained at the border.
International Flights: The main international airport in Mauritania is Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport, which offers connections to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Visa on arrival is typically available here.
It’s important to check the most up-to-date requirements online before traveling. Citizens of some countries may be exempted from applying for a visa or they might be eligible for a more simplified entry procedure. Check with the relevant Mauritanian embassy or consulate to confirm if you fall under any such arrangements.
Conclusion
Before traveling to Mauritania, verify the specific visa requirements for your nationality. Find out more information about visa on arrival at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport Airport website. You can also use a reputable Mauritania tour agency if you intend to tour Mauritania. They would provide you with the latest information about Mauritania visas, hotels and transportation within the country before and after your arrival. It is easier however to request for a long term visa at the airport as this would be processed faster than a visa renewal as the agencies in charge of visa Renewals do not have a unified platform anymore with each ministry having outdated information about the visa process.
Asides from this, if you are an investor, be rest assured that Mauritania is a great choice for business investment. Find out more information about doing business in Mauritania or you can reach out directly to the Mauritania ministry of commerce to get more information about investing in Mauritania if you are a French or Arabic speaker.
