Kizz Daniel's 'King of Love', Hit or Miss?

Genre: Afrobeats

Album type: EP

Track: 17

If you are reading this then you are probably a fan of Kizz Daniel. If you are not a fan, it doesn't matter. There are a thousand and one reasons why Kizz Daniel's music is something you should listen to. Kizz Daniel's new EP titled 'King of Love', has just the right blend of songs to get you grooving.

First, who is Kizz Daniel? Kiss Daniel is a popular Nigerian singer and songwriter who rose to the limelight in 2014. He is known for his Afro-pop-styled music which he often blends with other genres.

The single 'Woju' brought him popularity and fame. It topped the MTV Base Naija music charts for a long time. He later released critically acclaimed singles 'Yeba' followed by 'Laye'. All three singles were a hit.

In 2016 and 2017,  he released the New Era and No Bad SONGZ respectively. The New Era album got him a Headies Award for the best album of 2016.

On June 25, 2020, Kizz Daniel unveiled an EP titled 'King of Love', his third studio album produced by Mofoluwato Anidugbe.

The 17 track EP has no featured artist and four of its songs were produced by Young John, Selebobo, KrizBeatz and Philkeyz, Majorbangz Runtinz, and ATG. This is completely different from Kizz Daniel's style. Well, I think he probably wants to express himself at his best.

In less than 24 hours of King of Love's release, King of Love got over 350 million streams across many streaming platforms. There were also over 220 million YouTube streams in less than 24 hours.

'King of Love's sample review stirred a lot of controversy on Twitter as people talked about what they liked and did not like about the EP.

The songs that got the most play on air and off air were: "Jaho, Ada, Aii, Pak'n' Go, Boys are Bad, Chana, Padi and Tempted to steal". While "Jaho, Ada, Aii, Tempted to steal and Pak'n'Go" had the most uploads on Audiomack.

Now, let's talk about the tracks. What is great or not great about 'King of Love' tracks? The first track, Jaho, has a freshness of sound. It begins with a slow beat which steadily grows louder. It combines high trumpet notes with a fast drumbeat and piano notes in a synchronizing harmony.

Jaho has powerful lyrics coupled with great beats that draw you into the song right from the beginning. Jaho lyrics talk about you not forgetting who you are no matter what happens. It's uplifting and makes you reflect.

The 'ADA' track starts with a fast tempo which goes all the way to the end. You can expect to find the usual musical and lyrical cliches in Nigerian music in this track. The 'ADA' track also has fantastic beats which makes it perfect for a club music playlist.

'Boys are bad' track starts with a high tempo alongside splashes of percussive color which goes all the way to the end. It almost sounds grating but the harmony makes it sound melodious.

The track 'We wan Comot' blends unique chords with drum beats that break and pick up at intervals bringing out the richness of the afrobeat style.

'Aii' track incorporates a few reggae beats with Afrobeats. It has a rising and falling tempo with a mix of drum rolls at intervals.

The 'Aii' track brings out the feeling of love and the best part of the lyrics are these lines:

"Oh my baby look into my eyes

No one can take your place Aii".

It's a song that reassures the lover that her place is never going to be taken no matter what. The theme 'undying love' runs through the lyrics.

'Pak 'n' Go' vocals are a bit off-key but the instruments are still in sync. Its strong points are its beat and fast tempo.

'Need Somebody' has soft beats and it maintains a slow tempo with rising and falling beats throughout the track.

'Tempted to steal' begins with a monologue phone conversation the artist makes to his lover. This is followed by the sound of guitar strings as the song begins.

This track has a blend of soft guitar beats with prominent flute chords that show up only once throughout the track play. While a low trumpet sound can be heard in the background of the track. This track has unique lyrics and tunes not common to Kizz Daniel's music style.

Chek, Yapa, Fuck You, One Day, Find A Bae, Padi, Chana, Pipa and Hook tracks all have fast tempos which are maintained throughout. They also have sprinkles of musical cliches in terms of beats and lyrics.

The 'Fuck You' track lyrics could be a bit offensive and sexist if you're a bit of a feminist. The artist talks about his woman cheating with so many men. He uses several hardcore words to describe her actions. He simply tries to make a point about women who don't know how to stay faithful in a relationship.

In terms of freshness and lyrical quality, 'Jaho', 'Aii', 'Tempted to Steal' and 'Padi' take the award. They all tell a story: about how to live life, love, friendship and how love can make you do extreme things sometimes.

'Jaho', 'Aii', 'Tempted to steal' have the most balanced tones and tender expressive melody from beginning to the end.

You could also group the tracks into danceable songs and soft music. The danceable tracks that would always be party favorites are: "Ada, Boys are Bad, We wan comot, Pak 'n' Go, Check, Yapa, Find A Bae, Chana, and Hook." These are songs for clubs and just about any occasion where you want to dance it out.

The good thing about the Jaho track is that it's good enough to be a party favorite and soft music for your cool songs playlist. It's also a track you could listen to with closed eyes.

'Aii', 'Tempted to steal' and 'Jaho' once again make the soft music list.

Few of the tracks can boast of tight lyrics though the rhyme and rhythm in all the tracks are fantastic. Also, there were a few songs that did not leave a good impression at all but 13 of the tracks made our 'great' and 'good' tracklist. It's a good thing because thirteen out of 17 is an impressive number!

Overall, Kizz Daniel's 'King of Love' can be rated a 7.5. It's great but it doesn't get a 10 rating because there are some songs in the EP which do not give the vibes expected from this album.

Now you know all about Kizz Daniel and his popping new EP. You can listen to it on Audiomack or download it on YouTube to feel the love which Daniel, King of Love wants you to feel.
